Holter monitor (Holter)

A Holter Monitor test is similar to an ECG, being a non-invasive test that measures the electrical activity of your heart.

A Holter Monitor is a small device that gets attached to your chest, that you wear for 24-48 hours, or in some cases up to 7 days, while you carry your normal daily routine.

A Holter monitor test provides a more in-depth insight into the heart’s activities due to the increased data capture that might not be present in an ECG.

Holter Monitor

You may be referred for a Holter Monitor test if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Unexplained shortness of breath
  • Palpitations or a fluttering/racing heartbeat
  • Dizziness, light headedness, or fainting spells
  • Unexplained fatigue or weakness

A Holter Monitor test may be recommended when:

  • An ECG hasn’t provided the information required by the cardiologist
  • To help find the cause of Arrhythmias (Irregular, too fast, or too slow heartbeat)
  • To check the effectiveness of treatment or new medications

The cardiologist will review all the data and will send a full report to your referring doctor.
